Great Tips on How to Beat the Winter Blues

How to Beat the Winter Blues

The Winter Blues can be a terrible thing. The lack of sunlight, shorter days, impure air, and a sedentary lifestyle are all causes of the Winter Blues. The good news is there are things you can do to beat the Winter Blues with the snow shovel you reluctantly had to buy.

  1. Spend time outside - I know what you're thinking...why go outside if it's dark and cold, right? This is the wrong way to go about it. Make it a point to go outside for at least 15 to 20 minutes a day, preferably during the sunniest part of the day. If it's cold outside, then dress as warm as possible.
  2. Exercise - During the cold winter months, many people naturally become lethargic. Do you want more energy throughout the day? Exercise! Exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your body. It can help with stress, depression, metabolic rate, and self-confidence. Exercise also helps release "feel good chemicals" from your brain, which improves your mood.
  3. Practice Deep Breathing - Breathing exercises, including yoga and other types of meditation, can help alleviate stress dramatically. Taking slow, deep breaths actually stimulates the vagus nerve, which is responsible for counteracting the stress response. You don't necessarily need to go out and join a yoga club to achieve results. Simply take time out of your day to clear your mind & breathe deeply while listening to relaxing music.
  4. Be Social - The winter months keep many of us indoors. Naturally, less people go out and socialize during this time. Don't be like most people! Make it a point to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family. Go out and socialize, even when you don't feel like it. Be just as social as you were during the summer months.
  5. Consider Light Therapy - Light therapy has been clinically proven to successfully help with Seasonal Affective Disorder (The Winter Blues). A light therapy device accurately reproduces full-spectrum white light, mirroring the effects of natural sunlight. Some may see it as a "sun emulator." 6. Avoid Alcohol and High Fat Foods - These are both "quick fixes." They may make you feel good momentarily, but they will leave you with less energy in the long run. Moderation is key.
  7. Change the Way You Think - Instead of thinking about how much you hate winter, think about the steps you can take to make yourself feel better. Remember to stay positive, and keep in mind that it will be spring before you know it!
